Drug Addiction Recovery Programs

Drug addiction recovery programs often use the twelve step program originally founded by the Alcoholics Anonymous group back in 1939. The program is geared not only to stopping the addiction, but learning to live without the cocaine, pills, nicotine, alcohol or whatever drug the addict is hooked on. The program is heavily slanted towards self recognition of the addiction, as well as a belief in a higher being and the hope to be rescued and forgiven by this religious aspect of the program. This works for some, but for others who do not feel that religion will help them a drug addiction recovery, a program relaying strongly on these aspects will be of no use. Some people do not feel that spirituality is what they need when trying to break the binds of drug addiction.

Many people who are hoping for drug addiction recovery need to be brought to the point, through counseling, of knowing that despite their slip into addiction they are still worthwhile human beings. They need to feel that those loved ones who they may have hurt by their lifestyle as an addict will welcome them back, accept them as a reformed addict and stand by them as they work to return to their previous lives; the ones before drugs. This will mean no longer spending time with the set of friends they did drugs with and this can be very lonely. Any drug addiction recovery program will work hard to show the patient that they must leave behind those who use drugs if they want to remain drug free.
Most programs for drug addiction use some type of behavior modification therapy.

They do this to teach the addict that the drug use is not just answering the body’s craving but the addict‘s lifestyle that answers whatever need the patient has that goes hand in hand with using drugs. It deals with not just the addiction but the emotions, attitudes and actions that are all part of the force that causes addictions. Drug addiction recovery is a process by which the addict must not only want to quit but must embrace the idea of permanent abstinence.
